CBA East Midlands – A Celebration of Volunteer Archaeology

The success of community archaeology depends on the leadership of professionals and the enthusiasm of amateurs. Daryl Garton was a shining example of such a professional. This meeting, supported by Ice Age Insights and CBA East Midlands, aims to highlight the work of Daryl and her co-professionals and volunteers.
The day starts with a walk around Bradgate Park, led by archaeologists and geologists. Bring your own lunch, but teas, coffees and cake will be provided. This is followed by a series of short talks in the afternoon.

2026 marks 50 years since York Archaeology (then known as York Archaeological Trust) began excavations at 16–22 Coppergate. Five years of continuous excavation between 1976 and 1981 uncovered a section of Viking Age York preserved in astonishing detail. The excavation became world famous, drawing visitors from around the world. Hear from archaeologists and researchers who will share their work and insights into the ongoing research.
Cost is £20.

2026 is the 350th anniversary of the death of Lady Anne Clifford, the last of the Cliffords to bear that name. A collection of previously unedited letters by Lady Anne, to Lady Anne and about Lady Anne has been edited by Professor Jessica Malay, and the volume also contains the memoir of Lady Anne’s secretary, George Sedgewick (1618-85), published in full for the first time.

Find out about the folkloric stories, beliefs, and customs of people living in England today. Almost 90% of people in England are familiar with the figure of Robin Hood. A quarter of people in England today say the summer or winter solstices are of spiritual significance to them personally.
Back in February, the team behind the The National Folklore Survey for England came to Weston Park Museum to introduce the project and outline some of its early findings.
