How is the Society run?
The Hunter Archaeological Society is a charity (Charity Number 213921) managed by Trustees and is required to hold an Annual General Meeting (AGM), with a Financial Statement which has been examined by an accountant, and an annual return to the Charity Commission.
The Trustees are members of a committee which meets four times a year – in February, May, September and November – timed to fit with certain annual activities. The AGM is held in March each year.
The President chairs the committee and talks, and usually serves for 3 years. He or she then becomes a Vice President and can remain active on the committee or keep in touch through the papers. There are 10 officers with specific roles and (from January 2026) 6 ‘ordinary’ committee members representing the wider membership of the Society.

Dr Ian Chowcat – Web Manager info@hunterarchaeologicalsociety.org.uk . Ian has been involved in the application of digital technology to learning, teaching and research at all levels of education since the early 1990s, including as former Director of the South Yorkshire e-Learning Programme. He has a PhD in Philosophy, and became interested in archaeology when studying the History of the English Landscape and of Early Medieval England with the University of Cambridge.

Dr Ruth Morgan – Secretary secretary@hunterarchaeologicalsociety.org.uk . An early student of archaeology at the University of Sheffield, Ruth focussed on the prehistoric Somerset Levels trackways for her doctorate and went on to work for English Heritage as a dendrochronologist. She later became a Quality Officer at Sheffield Hallam University, while volunteering for all sorts of heritage projects.

Mr Ashley Tuck – Transactions Editor editor@hunterarchaeologicalsociety.org.uk . As well as editing the Transactions, Ashley Tuck is a Research Manager for Wessex Archaeology. He moved to Sheffield in 2000 to study Archaeological Science at the University of Sheffield. He leads excavations at Sheffield Castle.
