Award for Moorland Project

Dr Tim Cockrell and his team have been Highly Commended for the Community Archaeology Project of the Year 2025, in the Marsh Awards managed by the Council for British Archaeology.

Tim has led a group of volunteers from the Bolsterstone Archaeology and Heritage Group, the Hunter Archaeological Society and others in pioneering moorland surveys over the last few years, recording archaeological features over the moors west of Sheffield from the Ewden valley down to the A57. The survey work is done in January and February in most weathers and over challenging terrain, and Tim has trained the team to recognise and record prehistoric features such as ring cairns, standing stones and rock art. Volunteers are so positive about their experience – the value of learning new skills together as a team in such a beautiful place.

The award was presented on Broomhead Moor when the CBA’s chief executive Neil Redfern came to see for himself what was being found on the moors.
