Ramblers’ Plaque to G.H.B.Ward installed at Sheffield Station

Sheffield Ramblers have recently installed a plaque in Sheffield Station commemorating Hunter founder member G.H.B. Ward’s journey by train to Edale to lead a walk around Kinder Scout in 1900.
On a September Sunday morning, Bert Ward led a group of 20 ramblers on a 20 mile walk around Kinder Scout, as the top of the plateau was forbidden to public access. The Hope Valley line had opened in 1894, and the walkers returned in the evening from Hope station. This was the birth of the influential Sheffield Clarion Ramblers.
Ward walked round on that first Clarion ramble exclaiming ‘Pioneers, oh pioneers’! He was a founder member of so many groups – not only the Hunter, but also the predecessors of the Labour Party, of the CPRE and of the Ramblers.
The stainless steel plaque is on the arches near the staircase over the bridge.
