Sheffield City Council approves major extensions to Conservation Areas

From 14 October 2025 more historic areas in Sheffield have had statutory protection, following the Council’s Planning and Highways Committee approval of recommendations that enlarged both the City Centre and Kelham Island Industrial Conservation Areas. Castlegate, Devonshire Green and Neepsend will benefit from a legal duty to preserve or enhance their character or appearance.

Since a consultation on a new Conservation Area for Castlegate was abruptly cancelled in 2019, many groups have campaigned for this additional protection. The Council has now listened, and the results speak for themselves.

The committee also resolved to request that the Transport, Regeneration and Climate Policy Committee add the designation of the Wicker and Victoria Quays to their work programme, in the hope this could be resolved earlier than the minimum three year horizon estimated by officers. The Council’s planning officers had won £165,000 funding from the Department of Culture, Media and Sport and Historic England. Four more Conservation Areas (Endcliffe, Norton, Oaks Park and Ranmoor) will also receive new appraisals and management plans in the second phase of the project.
